Memetik kata-kata Zig Ziglar ‘If you don’t see yourself as a winner, then you cannot perform as a winner,” kanak-kanak dicabar berfikiran pemenang sambil mengikuti Tuhan dengan setia seperti Kaleb (Bil.14:24).
The Diocesan BM Children’s Worship Conference was held at the Sibuga Vision School, Sandakan from 26-29 November 2018. The theme, based on Romans 8:37, was “I am a Conqueror” (Akulah Pemenang) and 1212 children and accompaniers from across Sabah attended the conference. Ven. Yong Thiam Choy captured the attention of the children by beginning the teaching sessions with superheroes from films popular with many kids. He challenged the children to be “Super Menang,” free from judgment, defeat and disappointment. Ven. Yong ended his teaching by leading the children in praying to receive the Lord Jesus as Saviour, who will enable them to become more than conquerors.
Following that, Canon Arun Kuak, Revd Timothy Sng, Revd Roy Tington and Ps Margaret Chong continued to lead the children in becoming conquerors at home, at school, at church and wherever they may be. They were challenged to be conquerors of faith by learning from and emulating the lives of Bible heroes such as David, Samuel Caleb, and Daniel and his friends. The speakers also reminded the children that a conqueror must always be “aware and watchful” for the presence of enemies (1 Pet. 5:8). Aside from that, to become conquerors, they have to cultivate hearts which are ready to learn and live in holiness. Borrowing from the words of Zig Ziglar, “If you don’t see yourself as a winner, then you cannot perform as a winner,” the children were challenged to think like a conqueror while following the Lord faithfully as Caleb did (Num. 14:24). The conference ended with a sending out service with families, in which Bishop Melter delivered a sermon challenging the children to continue to live as worshippers adorned with holiness (Psalm 96:9).
Workshops on puppetry, musical drama, choral speaking and dance which were led by Revd Timithy, Mrs Nielynda, Mr Jason and Ms Quency were held to equip the children to worship God creatively. They were given the opportunity to enrich the closing service by performing what they practised. The performances were related to Christmas, which was a deliberate decision in order that the children could return to their respective churches and share the joys of Christmas using these very performances.
Let us continue to pray that the children of our Diocese will continue to become conquerors in their lives as stated in Romans 8:37: ‘In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.’ All glory to the name of the Lord.
Ps Pareda Simon
